The National Basketball Association is conducting an investigation into the Los Angeles Clippers regarding potential salary cap circumvention connected to Kawhi Leonard’s 2019 free agency. The inquiry focuses on allegations that Leonard’s agent, Mark Robertson, sought prohibited benefits from the Los Angeles Lakers, which were explicitly refused by team ownership.
According to reports from The Athletic in 2019, Robertson approached Lakers officials, including owner Jeanie Buss, with requests for partial team ownership, a private aircraft, a residence, and guaranteed off-court endorsement income. Buss reportedly declined these demands across multiple communications, citing their illegality under league regulations.
The current NBA scrutiny is directed at whether Leonard received additional sponsorship money through arrangements made by the Clippers following his signing with the franchise. While it is not confirmed whether Leonard received the first three perks requested from the Lakers, the league is examining the financial structures surrounding his tenure in Los Angeles.
Leonard, who averaged 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in the previous season, has been traded back to the Toronto Raptors. However, the transaction has not been formalised. The Raptors are withholding finalisation of the deal until the NBA delivers its verdict, as any penalties imposed on Leonard could void his contract and create significant roster complications for Toronto.
The outcome of the investigation remains uncertain. If the league determines that salary cap rules were breached, Leonard’s 2024 contract with the Clippers could be voided, potentially impacting his career trajectory and future team eligibility. The league has not yet released a timeline for the completion of its review.
