The National Basketball Association has confirmed the death of Rick Adelman, a former player and head coach who was recently inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Adelman passed away at the age of 79, with the league announcing the news on Monday.

Adelman’s career in the NBA spanned nearly 30 years, characterised by his work as both a player and a coach. He is best known for his multiple stints with the Houston Rockets franchise, where he served as head coach for four seasons. His tenure in Houston is particularly noted for leading the team to a 22-game winning streak in 2008, a record that remains one of the most remarkable achievements in the club’s history.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver paid tribute to Adelman, describing him as one of the most respected and accomplished coaches in the history of the sport. In a statement, Silver highlighted Adelman’s leadership, innovation, and strategic acumen, noting that his genuine love for basketball left a lasting impression on generations of players and coaches. Silver also extended his deepest condolences to Adelman’s family and friends throughout the league.

The Houston Rockets issued a separate statement mourning the loss of one of the organisation’s most influential figures. The statement, which included condolences from the Fertitta family, emphasised Adelman’s professionalism and integrity during his time with the club. It noted that his legacy will forever remain a part of Rockets history and the broader fabric of the NBA.

Adelman is survived by his wife, Mary Kay, and his son, David, who currently serves as the head coach of the Denver Nuggets. He was preceded in death by his other son, R.J., a former Rockets assistant coach who died in 2018.
