Knicks star’s frustration during Game 1 clash coincides with league’s strictest penalties for arena misconduct

The NBA has launched an investigation into an interaction between New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson and courtside fans during Game 1 of the NBA Finals, sources confirmed to ESPN. The incident occurred late in the fourth quarter with 29.4 seconds remaining, while teammate OG Anunoby was at the free-throw line.

Brunson appeared visibly upset with the spectators during the sequence. He engaged in a conversation with crew chief official Scott Foster while Anunoby was shooting, and circled back to speak with Foster again after the match concluded. Reports indicate Brunson remained frustrated by the occurrence, though he declined to comment to reporters post-game and did not address the matter during Thursday’s practice day media session.

The Knicks secured a 105-95 victory over the San Antonio Spurs, extending their playoff winning streak to 12 consecutive games. Brunson contributed 30 points to the win, including 13 points in the fourth quarter without committing a turnover. New York’s 12-game playoff winning streak, 11 of which were won by double figures, features a plus-272 point differential, the best in the 80-year history of the NBA.

Concurrently, the league announced lifetime bans for two individuals involved in a separate court intrusion incident. A fan ran onto the court at the Frost Bank Center with 6:28 remaining in the fourth quarter to take a selfie with Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. A second individual involved in the incident will also receive a lifetime ban for their role in the disruption.

The incident halted play and caused further delay due to a jump ball after Spurs guard Dylan Harper lost possession. The NBA has emphasised fan conduct in recent years, issuing a memo to all 30 clubs at the start of the season regarding the consistent and vigilant enforcement of the Fan Code of Conduct. The league requires arena staff to be trained to identify and respond proactively to behaviour that violates NBA rules.

Prime Video was the first outlet to report the league’s investigation into the Brunson incident. Information from The Associated Press was used in the reporting of these developments.
