NBA Draft Lottery 2026: Which teams could benefit most by landing the No. 1 pick?
Analysts rank 13 franchises by rebuilding urgency as Milwaukee Bucks remain ineligible due to swap rights

Ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft Lottery, analysts have assessed 13 franchises based on their perceived necessity for the No. 1 overall pick. The assessment excludes the Milwaukee Bucks, who remain ineligible for the ranking due to existing swap rights with the Atlanta Hawks. Consequently, the Kings and the Jazz stand out as the primary beneficiaries of the upcoming draft, both holding a 14 per cent probability of winning the top selection.

The Kings are identified as the team that would benefit most from securing the first pick, with the roster described as old and expensive. With the new lottery reform on the horizon, Sacramento faces significant pressure to acquire a franchise player to build around, especially given that the team does not project as a playoff or play-in contender for the next season.

The Brooklyn Nets, Chicago Bulls, Washington Wizards, and Memphis Grizzlies are also flagged as primary candidates needing the top pick. The Nets possess real cap space and are viewed as being in an interesting position where the top pick could accelerate their timeline. The Bulls, who have struggled with roster construction over the last decade, require a star to help them escape play-in purgatory.

The Washington Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies face complex rebuilding scenarios. The Wizards have a confusing roster mix involving recent acquisitions like Trae Young and Anthony Davis, though winning the lottery could motivate the organisation to trade Davis. The Grizzlies appear to be heading toward a full reset following a divorce between Ja Morant and the franchise, with winning the lottery aiding their transition away from the star.

Probabilities for the remaining teams vary, with the Charlotte Hornets at 6.7 per cent and the Dallas Mavericks at 6.8 per cent. The Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors have lower chances at 2 per cent and 1.5 per cent respectively, while the Atlanta Hawks sit at the bottom of the list with a 1 per cent chance.

The context of the draft is further complicated by proposed 3-2-1 lottery reforms aimed at reducing tanking. Under this system, the Washington Wizards could pick no worse than No. 5 this year, and the worst-recorded team next year could pick as high as No. 12. Analysts note that while the reforms aim to combat tanking, the lack of star power in the 2027 class may alter team strategies, making the current 2026 draft particularly consequential for franchises looking to transform.
