NASCAR Cup Series race proceeds at Charlotte following death of Kyle Busch
The 2026 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway maintained its scheduled start time on Sunday despite the somber context surrounding the illness and passing of Kyle Busch.

The 2026 Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Cup Series race proceeded at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday, 24 May 2026, beginning at 6 p.m. ET. The event, traditionally regarded as NASCAR’s most grueling test and the finale of the Memorial Day weekend racing trio, took on a somber tone following the death of two-time Cup Series champion Kyle Busch earlier in the week.
NASCAR announced the passing of Busch on Thursday, 21 May 2026. The organisation, the Busch family, and other relevant parties issued a joint statement regarding the death, which occurred at a hospital near Charlotte Motor Speedway. Busch, aged 41, died from severe pneumonia that progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming complications.
Austin Hill substituted for Busch in the No. 33 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing. Hill and teammate Austin Dillon will represent the team as they mourn their colleague, who secured his first victory at Charlotte by winning the 2018 edition of the race.
The broadcast for the 2026 event was handled exclusively via streaming on Prime Video, with no national cable television coverage available. Organisers indicated that the race would proceed as long as weather conditions permitted.
The event concluded the Memorial Day weekend schedule, maintaining its position as the final race of the trio despite the tragic circumstances surrounding the absence of one of the sport’s most prominent figures.
