Two-time Cup Series title holder and record-breaking driver passes away following hospitalisation

NASCAR champion Kyle Busch has died at the age of 41, following hospitalisation for a severe illness. His final day was recorded as 21 May 2026, with the news confirmed by his family and NASCAR on the same day. Busch passed away at his home in Las Vegas.

A joint statement from NASCAR, the Busch family, and Richard Childress Racing described Busch as a "rare talent" and a "future Hall of Famer" who set records in national series wins and mentored younger drivers. He was currently driving for Richard Childress Racing and had secured two Cup Series titles over an 18-season career.

Busch held the record for the most wins across NASCAR’s three national series, with 234 victories in total. This tally included 63 Cup Series victories, ranking him ninth all-time, one spot behind Dale Earnhardt. He also claimed 102 wins in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and 69 in the Truck Series.

His career began in the Truck Series, making his national debut at Indianapolis Raceway Park. He was initially barred from competition for a few weeks due to age restrictions related to cigarette sponsorship in NASCAR at the time. His career included stints with Roush Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, and Joe Gibbs Racing.

Busch suffered a severe leg injury in 2015, missing 11 races at the start of the season. One week prior to his death, he won a Truck Series race at Dover Motor Speedway, extending his lead on the series' all-time wins list. He was celebrated for his aggressive driving style, his evolution into a mentor, and his record of 234 wins across NASCAR's national series.
