The Katalyst LINK probe will still approach the ageing observatory to test servicing techniques, but Swift is now expected to burn up in Earth’s atmosphere before the end of 2026.

NASA Cancels Its Rescue Mission for the Aging Swift Telescope

NASA has cancelled its planned rescue mission for the Swift space observatory, citing persistent failures in the attitude control system of the Katalyst Space Technologies LINK spacecraft. The probe was originally tasked with capturing the ageing telescope and raising its orbit to prevent re-entry, a process now estimated to occur before the end of 2026.

Swift has been operational since 2004, specialising in gamma-ray bursts despite an original mission lifespan of just two years. The observatory lacks a propulsion system capable of significantly raising its orbit, meaning it has been gradually losing altitude due to atmospheric drag. Increased solar activity in 2024 heated and expanded Earth’s upper atmosphere, which accelerated this descent and shifted re-entry estimates from the 2030s to the current year.

In a rapid-response effort, Katalyst Space Technologies launched the LINK spacecraft on 3 July 2026. The plan was for LINK to use robotic arms to capture Swift and use its own thrusters to lift the observatory to a safer altitude. However, engineers struggled for weeks to regain control of the spacecraft after issues arose with its orientation and stability systems.

Agency administrator Jared Isaacman confirmed the cancellation on Wednesday, stating that while the primary rescue outcome was not achieved, the mission remains valuable for advancing satellite servicing capabilities. He noted that the team moved with extraordinary speed to give Swift a chance to carry out more science while developing technologies needed for future orbital repairs.

Although the capture attempt is off, LINK will continue to approach Swift to conduct demonstrations of rendezvous, navigation, and close-proximity operations. NASA intends to use the data gathered from these manoeuvres to inform future missions aimed at repairing, relocating, or extending the lifespan of satellites in orbit.

The agency had warned from the outset that the mission was high-risk, as Swift was not originally built to be captured or repaired in space. Without an orbital boost, Swift will continue to lose altitude until it reaches denser layers of the atmosphere, where intense heating and aerodynamic forces will destroy much of the observatory during re-entry.
