Former UFC champions return to the cage as new promotion debuts on streaming platform

The inaugural event for MVP MMA is set to debut on Netflix this Saturday in Los Angeles, headlined by a mixed martial arts bout between former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano. The fight marks the end of a decade-long retirement for Rousey and a 17-year absence from the sport for Carano, bringing together two of the most influential figures in women’s combat sports for a long-anticipated matchup.

Rousey, the inaugural women’s UFC bantamweight champion, is widely recognised for her unprecedented dominance, stopping her first 12 opponents, all but one in the first round. Her career success extended beyond the octagon into Hollywood blockbusters and a main event run in WWE. Carano, considered a pioneer of women’s MMA, previously held the inaugural Strikeforce women’s featherweight title before retiring following a loss to Cris Cyborg.

The event also features a welterweight bout between Nate Diaz and Mike Perry, two former UFC fighters who have found success in other promotions. Diaz, 41, concluded his UFC career in 2022 with a submission victory over Tony Ferguson. He has since transitioned to professional boxing, securing his first win against Jorge Masvidal in 2024 after a loss to Jake Paul in 2023.

Perry departed the UFC in 2021 after suffering four losses in his final five bouts within the organisation. He has since moved to Bare Knuckle Boxing, where he has achieved a 6-0 record with four knockouts. Perry expressed confidence in his preparation, stating he is in the best shape of his life and ready for a battle against Diaz.

Other notable fighters returning to action on the card include Francis Ngannou. The event represents a significant moment for the new promotion, which aims to capture a broad audience through its partnership with Netflix. The broadcast marks a strategic move to bring high-profile combat sports content to a mainstream streaming platform, potentially altering the landscape of sports media distribution.

As the event approaches, attention remains on the historic nature of the Rousey-Carano bout. Both fighters have spoken about their return, with Rousey expressing gratitude for being brought back into the martial arts community. The outcome of the fight remains speculative, but the event itself signals a new chapter for both the athletes involved and the growing influence of streaming services in sports broadcasting.
