The US Department of Defense has announced Project Meridian, an initiative to identify the technologies and capabilities it says future battlefields will require. Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey and Newt Gingrich will lead the effort.

A commissioning note from Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth says the project will study future battlefields and propose capabilities to develop, test and field. The supplied announcement gives no details on the initiative’s structure or work schedule.

Engadget reports that Musk’s SpaceXAI and Luckey’s Anduril have Pentagon contracts, with deals valued at as much as US$4.16 billion. The report does not specify which contracts the figure covers or the relevant period.

Engadget also reports that none of the three leaders has served in the US military. It says Gingrich has worked on projects adjacent to the military and received an honorary doctorate from Air University last year.
