MSI’s $1,800 Claw 8 EX AI+ Launches Amid AI-Driven Supply Constraints

MSI has entered the premium segment of the portable gaming market with the release of the Claw 8 EX AI+, a device that significantly outpaces competitors in raw performance but carries a steep price tag. The handheld is priced at $1,800, a figure that places it well above the launch costs of rival units such as the ROG Xbox Ally X and the Lenovo Legion Go 2. An MSI spokesperson confirmed that the pricing strategy is driven by component and production costs, citing the impact of the artificial intelligence hardware boom on supply chains as a primary factor in driving up expenses for existing hardware.

At the core of the device is Intel’s Arc G3 Extreme chipset, built on the new Panther Lake architecture, which MSI states offers a substantial performance leap over previous Lunar Lake chips. The unit is equipped with 32 GB of LPDDR5x RAM, 1 TB of SSD storage, and an 8-inch 1920 x 1200 IPS touchscreen with a 120-Hz variable refresh rate. The hardware is housed in a 785-gram chassis featuring Hall effect sensors for the analog sticks and shoulder triggers, alongside an 80-watt-hour battery and extensive connectivity options including dual Thunderbolt 4 ports and Wi-Fi 7 support.

Performance benchmarks indicate the Claw 8 EX AI+ delivers high frame rates in demanding titles. In tests of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered on High settings at 1920 x 1200 resolution, the device achieved between 90 and 120 frames per second with XeSS upscaling enabled. Similarly, Crimson Desert ran at approximately 65 fps without upscaling, while Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight saw performance fluctuate between 100 fps and lower rates depending on in-game action. When docked to a 4K display, the unit maintained a reliable 60 fps in supported titles.

Battery life varies drastically depending on the workload and power profile selected. During intensive AAA gaming sessions on standard settings, the device lasts approximately 90 minutes on a full charge. However, enabling Endurance Mode, which caps output at 30 fps, extends playtime to over four hours, while less demanding titles can run for more than eight hours. The device also features a design where the screen extends below the main body, acting as a kickstand for vertical placement when connected to a dock.

Despite the hardware capabilities, the device faces criticism regarding its software ecosystem and user interface.
