Mozilla unveils Firefox Project Nova redesign and Web Serial API support
The upcoming update introduces rounded UI elements, enhanced privacy controls, and compact mode, while the current release enables hardware integration via the Web Serial API.
Mozilla has announced Project Nova, a significant visual redesign for the Firefox browser scheduled for release later this year. The overhaul features rounded user interface elements, including bubble-like tabs, and a refreshed fire-inspired colour palette. The update also aims to improve accessibility for privacy and artificial intelligence controls, with Mozilla stating it is updating icons to ensure visual consistency across both light and dark themes.
Concurrently, Mozilla has released Firefox 151, which introduces support for the Web Serial API. This new capability allows websites to control devices or deliver firmware without the need for native applications or installers. The current release also includes an updated Firefox Home page, new wallpapers, and the ability to merge multiple PDFs directly within the browser’s PDF viewer.
The Project Nova redesign will reintroduce compact mode, which condenses browser controls such as forward and backward buttons to maximise screen real estate. It will also enhance access to productivity features, including tab groups, split view, and vertical tabs. Mozilla is currently exploring controls for the shape of tabs and other interface elements, indicating that some design aspects are still under development.
Customisation options will expand with Project Nova, starting with new wallpapers and themes that apply to the entire browser window in both light and dark modes. Mozilla emphasises that its AI features and models are not downloaded to users' computers unless explicitly chosen. The company notes that its approach contrasts with competitors like Google Chrome, which has faced criticism regarding the large download sizes associated with its AI features.
While the exact release date for Project Nova remains unspecified, the immediate availability of Firefox 151 provides users with the latest hardware integration capabilities.
