Mourinho returns to Real Madrid as Perez reshapes squad for 2026-27 campaign
The club’s president pairs the Portuguese manager’s return with a high-profile transfer window and a long-term contract extension for Vinicius Jr.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has appointed Jose Mourinho as head coach for the 2026-2027 season, marking the Portuguese manager’s return to the club following his initial tenure from 2010 to 2013. The decision represents a strategic shift in the club’s approach to leadership, prioritising a manager with established familiarity over the younger coaching options considered after the departures of Carlo Ancelotti, Xabi Alonso, and Alvaro Arbeloa.
The managerial appointment coincides with significant structural changes to the roster, as the club seeks to replicate the successful model of Ancelotti’s second spell. Perez’s strategy involves securing a coach capable of managing a high-profile squad, a role Mourinho previously filled before stints at Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, AS Roma, Fenerbahce, and Benfica.
Transfer activity has been central to this restructuring, with the club signing defender Ibrahima Konate as a free agent from Liverpool. The squad was further bolstered by the acquisition of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea for approximately $63.5 million and Denzel Dumfries from Inter for $23 million.
Midfield reinforcements included the addition of Bernardo Silva as a free agent from Manchester City and Yann Diomande from RB Leipzig for $144 million. Diomande’s contract potentially positions him as the club’s highest-paid player, surpassing Jude Bellingham if performance bonuses are met.
A key institutional outcome of the summer window was the extension of Vinicius Jr’s contract until the summer of 2032. This move pre-empted a potential free-agent departure in 2027, securing the services of a player who had attracted interest from rivals such as Arsenal.
The club’s pursuit of Manchester City midfielder Rodri, however, ended in defeat as the player joined Barcelona. Mourinho acknowledged the setback in an interview with El Chiringuito, stating that Rodri had "doubts" despite a generous offer from Real Madrid. The Portuguese manager noted that while Rodri behaved properly, the club’s stature requires players who do not hesitate in their commitment.
