MLB to trial 8K and virtual reality broadcasts on Apple TV
Four consecutive games will be streamed in 8K resolution and virtual reality via Apple Vision Pro, marking a significant technological shift from standard 4K feeds.

Major League Baseball has announced a technological upgrade to its Friday Night Baseball coverage, partnering with Apple TV to broadcast four consecutive games in 8K resolution and virtual reality. The initiative commences on August 28 and represents a departure from the standard 4K broadcasts currently offered on the streaming platform.
The immersive feeds will be accessible via the Apple Vision Pro headset and will feature dedicated announcer teams designed to complement the high-fidelity visual experience. This move underscores MLB’s ongoing integration with digital streaming services, which has gradually altered traditional cable broadcasting models for the sport.
The scheduled matchups for the trial period include the Boston Red Sox at the New York Yankees on August 28, followed by the Los Angeles Angels at the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 4. The series continues with the San Diego Padres at the San Francisco Giants on September 11, and concludes with the San Francisco Giants at the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 18.
While the technical specifications for the 8K and VR formats are detailed, the long-term viability of this specific broadcast style remains unconfirmed. It is currently unclear whether the immersive feeds will extend beyond this initial four-week window or become a permanent fixture in the league’s media strategy.
The partnership highlights the league’s willingness to experiment with advanced viewing technologies, although it remains uncertain how these changes will impact broader audience engagement beyond subscribers with access to the necessary hardware.
