Brooks questions whether the Dolphins overpaid for a fifth-year signal-caller with only six professional starts, noting Willis’s past struggles with the Tennessee Titans. Despite the familiarity between Willis and Dolphins leadership—general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley, who previously worked with him at the Green Bay Packers—Brooks suggests recreating that success in South Florida presents a significant challenge for a team in rebuild mode.
Similarly, the Indianapolis Colts’ four-year, $114 million extension for wide receiver Josh Downs is flagged as a high-risk commitment, with $84 million guaranteed. Brooks expresses doubt regarding Downs’ ability to sustain his production as a primary receiver against focused defensive strategies. Although the wide receiver averaged over 20 yards per catch in the two seasons prior to the extension, Brooks notes the difficulty of transitioning from a WR2 to a WR1 role against defenses employing “traveling” corners and loaded zones.
The Carolina Panthers’ signing of defensive player Lloyd is also listed among the riskiest deals, with a three-year, $42 million contract ($25 million guaranteed). Brooks points to the player’s breakout 2025 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he recorded five interceptions and earned Pro Bowl honours, but highlights the risk associated with transitioning to a full-time role in Carolina.
