Firefighting teams employed creative engineering solutions to tackle the blazes. Engineers repurposed oil pipelines to pump water from the Persian Gulf into the burning fields. One Hungarian company developed a machine called Big Wind, which utilised a T-34 tank chassis and two MiG-21 fighter jet turbines to blast 220 gallons of water per second.

Beyond the fires, the reconstruction required removing extensive booby traps and landmines left by the Iraqi army, including small plastic "toe poppers" designed to maim. The author estimates that hundreds of thousands of these devices remain unexploded, illustrating that while progress was made, not everything could be fixed.

The editorial contrasts these historical challenges with modern engineering feats, including the Rogfast subsea tunnel in Norway and the semiconductor manufacturing capabilities of ASML.
