Mistral is rumored to be raising €3B at €20B valuation
French AI lab seeks to nearly double its last valuation as it positions itself as a sovereign European alternative to US tech giants

French artificial intelligence laboratory Mistral AI is in early discussions to raise approximately €3 billion ($3.5 billion), a move that would value the company at around €20 billion ($23.15 billion). According to a report by Bloomberg on Friday, citing anonymous sources, the proposed funding round represents a significant jump in the company’s market worth, nearly doubling the €11.7 billion valuation it achieved during its Series C funding round last September.

Launched in 2023, Mistral has distinguished itself by offering a mix of open-weight foundational large language models and closed models tailored for specific enterprise use cases such as programming and voice generation. The company has positioned itself as a sovereign European alternative to American technology giants, securing partnerships with the French army, the Luxembourg government, and various major European corporations.

The potential new valuation reflects the company’s strategic pivot toward infrastructure and sovereignty. Mistral is currently establishing a data centre near Paris, a move aligned with its goal to provide a homegrown alternative as European nations seek to distance themselves from American tech dominance. The company’s stated ambition remains to put frontier AI in the hands of everyone, contrasting its open approach with the more closed ecosystems of its US competitors.

Despite these ambitions, Mistral’s capitalisation remains modest compared to its American rivals. According to data from Pitchbook, the French lab has raised approximately $4 billion to date. This figure is a fraction of the capital amassed by US competitors OpenAI, which has raised $186 billion, and Anthropic, which has secured $161.25 billion. These American labs currently hold higher valuations, reflecting their lead in revenue, model adoption, and enterprise demand.

Mistral did not immediately return a request for comment regarding the reported discussions. The funding round remains in the early stages, and the final valuation and terms have not yet been confirmed.
