Microsoft to enforce view-only mode for Office 2019 and 2021 on Mac after July 2026
Microsoft is set to disable editing capabilities for Office 2019 and 2021 on macOS and iOS following the expiry of a license-validation certificate, marking a significant shift for users of the one-time purchase software.
Microsoft will enforce a view-only mode for perpetually licensed versions of Office 2019 and 2021 on macOS and iOS after a license-validation certificate expires on July 13, 2026. Under this new configuration, users will be able to open and view files but will be unable to edit, save, or access full features. This change affects Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote installations on Mac, iPhone, and iPad devices.
The move follows the end of support for Office 2019 for Mac in October 2023, when Microsoft previously assured customers that their installed applications would continue to function normally. However, by May 2026, Microsoft had removed this assurance from its support pages, replacing it with guidance that data can be accessed on supported Microsoft 365 or Office products. The company has issued no public statement reconciling the upcoming conversion with the earlier end-of-support promises.
Office 2019 for Mac cannot be updated to resolve the issue, as the product line is bounded by a hard build cap below the minimum required version of 16.83. Microsoft’s support documentation confirms that the issue cannot be resolved by updating or reinstalling Office 2019 for Mac. In contrast, Office 2021 for Mac users on supported systems, specifically macOS 12 or later and iOS 17 or later, can update to build 16.83 to maintain full functionality.
Microsoft began emailing affected customers in mid-May 2026 regarding the upcoming changes. The communications included an offer for a free Microsoft 365 Personal trial, which requires a payment method and converts to a paid subscription if not cancelled. The company is directing users to switch to Microsoft 365 subscriptions, web apps, or new perpetual licenses such as Office Home 2024 to avoid the reduced functionality mode.
Initial reactions to the announcement have been largely negative, with some IT consultancies characterising the move as breaking previous commitments. While Windows and Android versions of Office are not affected by the certificate expiry, Mac and iOS users face a choice between accepting view-only access, migrating to alternative software, or adopting a subscription model. The Windows and Android versions of Office remain unaffected by this certificate expiry.
