Microsoft to disable Office 2019 for Mac editing capabilities in July
Users with the one-time license version of Office 2019 will lose the ability to edit or save documents from July 13, 2026, as Microsoft enforces end-of-support protocols.
Microsoft is set to disable editing and saving capabilities for Office 2019 for Mac users starting July 13, 2026, following the expiry of a validation certificate. The tech giant is not renewing the certificate that verifies Office licenses, meaning the suite will enter a reduced functionality mode. While users will retain the ability to open existing files, they will be unable to edit, save, or create new documents in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.
This development marks a significant shift for owners of the one-time license product, which reached its end of support on October 10, 2023. Microsoft previously stated that all Office 2019 apps would continue to function, but the company quietly updated its support documentation last month. The revised note removed the guarantee of continued functionality, replacing it with assurances that data would not be lost. The company confirmed that because Office 2019 cannot be updated to the required version, the issue cannot be resolved through updates or reinstallation.
Affected users are now required to purchase Office 2024 or subscribe to Microsoft 365 to continue working with documents. The move has drawn scrutiny given that the certificate issue breaks core functionality for an application purchased under a perpetual license model. Microsoft regularly ends support for older software, carrying inherent risks for legacy users, though the lack of an exception for this specific certificate expiry has been noted as surprising by industry observers.
In contrast to the Office 2019 situation, Microsoft is providing a certificate update for Office 2021 for Mac. This version will remain fully functional until its support ends on October 13, 2026. Additionally, older versions of Microsoft 365 apps on Mac and iOS are affected by the same certificate issue, but users can resolve the problem through a simple software update.
The enforcement of these restrictions highlights the operational risks associated with maintaining older applications. As Microsoft phases out support for legacy versions, the company is directing users toward its subscription-based ecosystem or newer perpetual license products. For those unable to upgrade immediately, the period between July 13 and the end of October 2026 will allow for file viewing only, with no capacity for further document creation or modification.
