Microsoft tests Windows 11 customisation features for Insiders
The company is also testing the ability to reposition the Windows 11 taskbar.

Microsoft has initiated the rollout of experimental updates for Windows 11 to users enrolled in the Windows Insider Experimental channel. The update introduces granular customisation options for the operating system’s interface, addressing previous feedback regarding the default layout. Users can now select between Small and Large Start menu sizes via the settings, with the chosen size remaining consistent across multiple displays.
The changes follow a significant increase in the default Start menu size following an update in November of the previous year, which nearly doubled its dimensions. Microsoft had previously acknowledged user feedback regarding the size and stated it was investigating the issue. The new experimental build provides a direct toggle to revert to the smaller interface, allowing users to tailor the experience to their preferences.
In addition to size adjustments, the update introduces section-level toggles that allow users to hide or show Pinned, Recommended, and All items within the Start menu. These toggles are scheduled to roll out over the coming weeks. A separate control enables users to disable file recommendations specifically within the Start menu without affecting other areas of the operating system. Users can also hide their name and profile picture in the Start menu to protect privacy when sharing screens or streaming.
The update also grants users the ability to reposition the taskbar to any screen edge, including the top, bottom, left, or right. Icon alignment options adjust based on the taskbar’s position: top-aligned and centered icons are available when the taskbar is on the left or right edges, while left-aligned and centered options are available for top or bottom positions.
Microsoft’s Windows Insider program allows registered users to preview these experimental builds and provide feedback before wider public release. The updates are being distributed to Insiders in the Experimental channel starting today and will continue over the coming week. The exact timeline for the wider rollout of these features beyond the Insider program has not been specified.
