Microsoft tests Auto SR on Xbox Ally X for Xbox Insiders
Microsoft has begun previewing its Automatic Super Resolution feature on the Xbox Ally X, leveraging the device's NPU to upscale resolution and boost frame rates without taxing the GPU.

Microsoft has initiated a preview test of its Automatic Super Resolution technology on the Xbox Ally X handheld, specifically targeting the docked play mode where the device connects to larger external displays. This feature, which competes with Nvidia's DLSS, is currently available exclusively to members of the Xbox Insider program. The technology utilises the device's Neural Processing Unit to upscale resolution and improve frame rates without impacting GPU performance, addressing visual quality drops often seen on bigger screens.
The feature is integrated directly into the Game Bar, allowing users to toggle it on or off for DirectX 10 or later games. Microsoft states that Auto SR is designed primarily for games running below 60fps to improve smoothness, noting that docked play scenarios are where players will see the most value from the enhancement. Unlike competitor technologies that often require specific game developer integration, Auto SR is built into Windows and can apply super resolution to existing titles that lack native upscaling options.
Simultaneously, Microsoft and Asus have announced improvements to the docking experience, including automatic display switching and Variable Refresh Rate support. These upgrades ensure that the handheld screen turns off automatically when a TV is connected, while the ROG Bulwark dock enables smoother gameplay on compatible televisions. The partners have also introduced enhanced haptic feedback to better match the expected feel across Xbox devices.
A new unified library experience is rolling out, enabling users to manage and launch games from various PC storefronts directly through the Xbox Ally interface. This allows players to add, remove, edit, and launch any installed game or app directly from the Xbox experience, including titles from other PC gaming storefronts and launchers. Roanne Sones, CVP of gaming devices and ecosystem at Xbox, highlighted this integration as a key part of the improved ecosystem experience.
While the technology functions similarly to Nvidia's DLSS by rendering games at a lower resolution and upscaling them, the efficacy remains to be fully validated for the general public. Microsoft is currently demonstrating the feature with Forza Horizon 5, but results may vary significantly depending on the title. The preview nature of the feature means that performance metrics and visual quality improvements are not yet fully established across a wide variety of games beyond specific demonstrations.
