Microsoft teases unified Xbox interface strategy to address ecosystem fragmentation
Jason Ronald outlines efforts to reduce fragmentation while acknowledging subtle variations remain necessary for different devices

Microsoft has revealed details of a new user interface designed to provide a consistent experience across Xbox consoles, handhelds, PC, and cloud gaming. Jason Ronald, vice-president of next generation at Xbox, highlighted these efforts during a recent presentation, emphasising the goal to reduce fragmentation and ensure the interface feels distinctly Xbox regardless of the device used.
The update includes specific changes to the console home screen and the PC app, with hints pointing toward a new Xbox store interface for Windows. While the core experience aims for uniformity, the company acknowledges that subtle differences must remain to accommodate varying screen sizes and input methods.
A newly released video of the Game Developers Conference keynote in March provides clearer visuals of the proposed UI changes compared to initial footage. Specific adjustments include a modified console home screen featuring the user profile in the top right corner and a reduction in advertisement slots on the PC app from four to three.
The Xbox PC app interface appears to be adopting a design similar to the Xbox Cloud Gaming UI, incorporating new animations, a library section, and rounded design elements. Microsoft previously noted that while the core experience will be consistent, interfaces will not be identical across all devices to account for different usage scenarios.
Microsoft has not confirmed a specific rollout timeline for the UI changes to the PC app or the Windows store. The extent of the changes to the Xbox store on Windows remains vague, described only as a new store in the presentation slides without independent verification.
Linxi News has asked Microsoft for comment on the new Xbox UI and store changes and will update this report if further information is received. In the meantime, interested parties are encouraged to view the full Xbox game dev update video to see Ronald's full keynote presentation.
