Microsoft retires Teams Together Mode to prioritise video stability

Microsoft has announced the retirement of the Together Mode feature within its Microsoft Teams application, marking a strategic pivot away from virtual environment simulations toward core performance enhancements. The company states that the decision aims to prioritise improvements in video quality, stability, and overall performance over the AI-driven feature that placed users in shared virtual conference rooms.

Launched during the pandemic to simulate in-person collaboration, Together Mode used artificial intelligence to cut out users' heads and shoulders, placing them in a virtual space with others in the meeting. While the feature was noted for limiting visual distractions, Microsoft now describes it as having become "gimmicky," citing instances where users engaged in virtual interactions such as tapping colleagues on the shoulder or giving high fives.
