Xbox hires game industry analyst Matthew Ball to lead strategy
Game industry analyst Matthew Ball appointed chief strategy officer as Scott Van Vliet joins as CTO

Microsoft has announced a significant leadership restructuring within its Xbox division, appointing game industry analyst Matthew Ball as chief strategy officer. The move marks the second major leadership change at the gaming arm this month, as Xbox CEO Asha Sharma seeks to strengthen the division’s operational foundation and improve execution ahead of the upcoming Xbox Showcase event.

Ball, widely respected across the gaming, media, and technology sectors for his annual state of video gaming report, will report directly to Sharma. According to a memo to employees seen by The Verge, Sharma described Ball as a “longtime gamer” who has already been partnering with Xbox on strategy since “day 10.” He will officially start this month, bringing a history of strategy and leadership roles at Illumination, Amazon Studios, Otter Media, and Accenture Strategy.

Concurrently, Scott Van Vliet has joined Xbox as chief technology officer. Van Vliet previously led Azure AI infrastructure at Microsoft and held key positions at Amazon, including work on Fire TV and the Appstore. Sharma noted that Van Vliet has been part of the Xbox community since the original Live beta in 2002. He is currently ramping up and will formally assume his role after the Showcase event.

The restructuring also includes the promotion of Chris Schnakenberg to corporate vice president of partnerships and business development. Sharma clarified that there are no changes to the reporting lines for the Hardware, Helix, or OS divisions, which will continue to report directly to her.

These appointments follow earlier additions to the Xbox leadership team from Microsoft’s CoreAI division earlier in the month. Sharma indicated that the current wave of changes is not the final one, stating that the company will continue making adjustments to position Xbox for the future as it heads toward the Showcase and beyond.
