Miami open season with record performances in 45-6 win over Stanford
Malachi Toney set Miami’s reported single-game receiving record, while Duke transfer Darian Mensah marked his Hurricanes debut with 401 passing yards and five touchdowns.
Miami began its season with a 45-6 victory over Stanford, led by a record-setting performance from sophomore wide receiver Malachi Toney and an emphatic debut from quarterback Darian Mensah.
Toney caught 12 passes for 234 yards, surpassing Eddie Brown’s Miami record of 220 yards set in 1984, according to ESPN. He also caught three touchdowns, tying the programme’s reported single-game mark.
Mensah completed 27 of 30 passes for a career-high 401 yards and five touchdowns. The Duke transfer set Miami debut records for passing yards and touchdown passes after leading Duke to the ACC title last season.
The new partnership made an immediate impact, with Toney taking a 48-yard pass from Mensah on Miami’s first play from scrimmage. Both players were removed in the third quarter with Miami comfortably ahead.
Duke transfer Cooper Barkate added four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown as Miami controlled the game from the outset.
