Mexico retained its CONCACAF U-20 Championship title with a decisive 2-0 victory over the United States in the final on Sunday. The match, held in Mexico City, concluded an unbeaten campaign for the Mexican side, which conceded only one goal throughout the entire tournament.

Cristóbal Alfaro was the pivotal figure in the victory, scoring both goals with headers. The Mexican defender opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a powerful, close-range header from a set piece. He sealed the win with a second header in the 69th minute, cementing Mexico’s status as regional champions.

The United States’ chances were significantly compromised just before halftime when captain Chris Applewhite received a red card. The dismissal followed a VAR review that determined Applewhite had committed a foul on Hugo Camberos, reducing the US team to 10 players for the remainder of the contest.

Following the match, Alfaro described the victory as a "dream come true" and emphasised the collective nature of the achievement. He thanked fans for their unconditional support, noting the significance of winning the title on home soil.

Both Mexico and the United States had already secured qualification for next year’s Under-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan prior to the final. By reaching the championship match, both nations also secured automatic spots in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
