Mets pitcher Clay Holmes will be out 'a long time' after breaking leg on 111 mph comebacker vs. Yankees
Manager Carlos Mendoza says right-hander will be out for “a long time” after being struck by 111.1 mph comebacker

The New York Mets’ contention hopes suffered a significant setback on Friday as pitcher Clay Holmes sustained a fractured fibula during a 5-2 loss to the New York Yankees. The injury occurred in the fourth inning when Holmes was struck on the lower leg by a 111.1 mph comebacker hit by Yankees rookie Spencer Jones. Despite the severity of the impact, Holmes remained in the game, continuing to pitch until the fifth inning before departing after allowing four runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza indicated that Holmes will be absent for “a long time,” with the recovery period likely spanning weeks or possibly months. This timeline represents a substantial blow to a rotation that has already been decimated by injuries. Holmes, who is in his age-33 season, had been the team’s most effective starter, leading the Mets in Wins Above Replacement (WAR) with 1.9 and maintaining a 2.39 earned run average across nine starts and 52 2/3 innings.

The loss of Holmes compounds an already critical situation within the pitching staff. He will join fellow starters Kodai Senga, who is sidelined with spine inflammation, Tylor Megill, who underwent Tommy John surgery in September 2025, and Justin Hagenman, who is recovering from a rib fracture. The cumulative effect of these injuries has severely limited the team’s options for maintaining competitive performance in the major leagues.

With the primary rotation depleted, the Mets face difficult decisions regarding who will fill Holmes’ upcoming turns. Sean Manaea, who has been utilised in a long relief role this season, is one potential candidate, although he has struggled with consistency. Another option is prospect Jonah Tong, who made five starts for the club last season but has performed poorly at Triple-A Syracuse in 2026. The lack of viable alternatives underscores the depth issues currently plaguing the organisation.

The defeat on Friday ended a three-game winning streak and dropped the Mets to 18-26 on the season, placing them in last place in the National League East. Entering the 2026 season, the club aimed to contend for a playoff spot after narrowly missing the postseason the previous year. Instead, they have emerged as one of Major League Baseball’s most disappointing teams, and the latest injury to a key contributor further diminishes their prospects of mounting a meaningful comeback in the standings.
