London’s Metropolitan Police have charged a 14-year-old boy with preparation of terrorist acts linked to extreme right-wing ideology, following an alleged plot to target mosques in the Sutton area of south London. The charge was confirmed on Wednesday by police, who described the matter as a serious terrorism allegation involving a minor.

The investigation began on July 9 when the boy was arrested for criminal damage to a vehicle. Subsequent searches conducted by officers uncovered documents that escalated the inquiry, leading to the current charge of conduct in preparation for giving effect to an intention to conduct acts of terrorism. Police stated that the specific nature of the documents and the detailed mechanics of the alleged plot have not been disclosed.

Helen Flanagan, head of counterterrorism policing in London, acknowledged the gravity of the situation. She described the charge as very serious and likely to be highly concerning to both the public and the local community. Flanagan emphasised that while the charge is significant, police do not believe the case indicates a wider threat to the public.

In response to the allegations, the Metropolitan Police have contacted the affected mosques in Sutton to offer advice, support, and reassurance. Flanagan noted that authorities are working closely with the venues to ensure they are kept updated and supported during this period. The boy is scheduled to appear before a magistrates’ court in London on Thursday.

The incident follows a series of recent alleged right-wing plots targeting Muslims in the United Kingdom. Earlier this week, British police arrested 12 people in connection with an extreme right-wing plot to target an Islamic gathering in Suffolk. Last month, a man was charged with attempted murder linked to terrorism following a suspected anti-Muslim stabbing rampage in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Detective Chief Superintendent Nick Blackburn, who oversees local policing in south London, highlighted the broader implications of such events. He stated that authorities must not underestimate the cumulative impact of incidents of this nature on the Muslim community. Blackburn affirmed that police would continue to provide reassurance and support to local residents in the wake of the arrest.

Due to the suspect’s age, his identity is protected under legal restrictions and safeguarding protocols, and he must not be published. The Metropolitan Police have maintained that their focus remains on supporting the affected community while the legal process proceeds.
