More than a decade later, the team behind N++ is back with a multiplayer sequel
Independent studio behind cult hit N++ shifts focus to couch co-op and competitive play after decade-long development cycle

Metanet Software has officially announced N Plus Infinity Times Two, a multiplayer sequel to its 2015 platformer N++. Developed by co-founders Raigan Burns and Mare Sheppard, the title is scheduled for release in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The announcement, made during the 2026 Day of the Devs summer showcase, marks a significant pivot from the studio’s previous single-player focus, responding to evolving player habits and a desire to merge classic couch co-op experiences with modern social gaming.

The game is described by the developers as a "couch party game" designed to offer a low skill floor with no skill ceiling. While it retains the acrobatic platforming and minimalist aesthetic that defined N++, the core loop now centres on competitive and cooperative modes. Burns noted that the inspiration for this shift came from observing younger players who socialise while gaming, often chatting with friends even when playing solo. The studio aimed to capture that communal energy within a physical shared space, creating a title that feels distinct from the grueling, solitary challenge of its predecessor.

Metanet Software has maintained a two-person structure since its inception, resisting the industry norm of scaling up operations to accommodate larger projects. The studio relocated from Toronto to Montreal over the last decade but has kept its team small to preserve an iterative, prototyping-heavy development philosophy. Burns compared the studio’s workflow to being in a band, prioritising creative iteration over corporate management structures. This approach has allowed them to release only two major titles, N+ and N++, but has also drawn comparisons to other indie sequels like Hades II and Silksong that prioritise core concept refinement over standard production pipelines.

The development cycle for N Plus Infinity Times Two follows a 10-year anniversary update for N++ released in 2025. Burns stated that the team began feeling the urge to return to the N concept in 2022, after years of prototyping other ideas. The developers emphasised that the new project feels like a natural evolution rather than a forced commercial product. Sheppard added that the studio no longer views N++ as the definitive end of the series, suggesting that future iterations may occur if they can offer a new perspective on the gameplay mechanics.

Details regarding specific multiplayer modes and an exact launch date within the 2027 window have not been disclosed. The studio also confirmed that while there are concepts for potential 3D games in development, these would require scaling up the team, a move the founders have so far avoided. For now, the focus remains on delivering a polished, distinct multiplayer experience that honours the studio’s history while adapting to contemporary player expectations.
