Meta won’t let you block its AI account on Threads
New tagging feature rolls out in select markets, but full blocking option remains unavailable despite user frustration

Meta has launched a test feature on Threads that enables users to tag the Meta AI account to receive answers and context within conversations. However, the platform currently does not permit users to block this specific account. Attempts to do so result in errors, sparking significant user frustration and generating a large volume of complaints on the site.

The functionality is initially available as a test in Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. While users can mute, hide, or mark Meta AI posts as "Not interested" to reduce visibility, a full block option remains unavailable. Users who saw the option to block the feature reported hitting errors when they tried to execute the action.

Meta spokesperson Christine Pai stated that while users cannot block the account, they can manage their experience via muting or hiding options. The company emphasises that these tools are designed to allow people to quickly gather context before jumping into a conversation, offering an alternative to a complete block during this testing phase.

This situation mirrors a similar functionality on X, formerly Twitter, where users can tag xAI's Grok account. Meta has invested billions in AI development to compete with rivals like OpenAI and Google, recently launching the Muse Spark model in April. The new Threads feature allows users to tag the Meta AI account for answers to questions or context about a conversation on the platform.

The announcement was made on Tuesday and has generated over one million posts discussing the inability to block the account. Threads boss Connor Hayes has faced angry replies regarding the lack of a block option, with users expressing dissatisfaction that they cannot fully opt out of the integrated AI service.

The specific duration of the test phase and when the block feature might be added, if at all, are not disclosed by the company. It remains unclear if the inability to block is a technical limitation or a deliberate policy choice during the testing phase, though Meta maintains that existing management tools are sufficient for now.
