Tech giant accelerates hardware expansion with AI pendant and new smart glasses lineup

Meta is accelerating its hardware strategy to mitigate substantial financial losses in its Reality Labs division, which reported a $19 billion deficit in 2025. According to a report by The Information, the company aims to sell 10 million wearable devices in the second half of 2026. This aggressive expansion includes the development of an AI pendant and the planned release of up to four new smart glasses models before the end of the year.

The AI pendant project follows Meta’s 2025 acquisition of Limitless, the maker of the original "Pendant" device. Meta intends to begin testing the new pendant over the coming year, building on the technology Limitless developed for recording and summarising conversations. Limitless CEO Dan Siroker previously stated that the acquisition aligned with Meta’s vision to bring personal superintelligence to users through AI-enabled wearables.

In addition to the pendant, Meta is preparing to debut a diverse range of smart glasses. Internal memos from Alex Himel, Meta’s vice-president for wearables, outline a release schedule that includes a new pair codenamed "Modelo" as soon as June. Further models, "Luna" and "RBM2 Refresh", are expected in the autumn, followed by "Mojito VIP" in December. The company is also testing future models named "Artemis" and "SSG", or supersensing glasses.

To commercialise these devices, Meta is launching a business-focused subscription service called "Wearables for Work". The company is targeting at least 10 companies to sign up for the service, with specific goals to deploy devices to two large organisations requiring 100 units each. Himel’s internal communications emphasise the need to increase usage of Meta’s AI models and drive subscription uptake, including for the unreleased consumer AI agent "Hatch".

This hardware push coincides with broader monetisation efforts across Meta’s social platforms. The company recently introduced subscription tiers with exclusive features for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, testing a new monthly payment system called "Meta One". During the fourth quarter of 2025 earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg indicated that Reality Labs would focus on glasses and wearables, with expectations that divisional losses would gradually decrease.
