Meta settles federal trial with 51 US states for up to $16.7bn
The tech giant has agreed to a guaranteed payout of $12.7bn over a decade, with the remainder contingent on rivals adopting similar safeguards for young users.
Meta has reached a settlement with 51 US states and territories to resolve a federal lawsuit alleging the company failed to protect young users on its social media platforms. The deal, valued at up to $16.7 billion, concludes a high-profile trial that began in August 2026 in Oakland, California, presided over by US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers.
Under the terms of the agreement, Meta is required to make a guaranteed payment of $12.7 billion over a period of 10 years. The remaining balance of the settlement is contingent on competitors such as TikTok, YouTube, and Snap adopting similar safeguards for their own platforms.
As part of the resolution, Meta will implement specific product changes on Instagram and Facebook regarding how teenagers use the platforms. While the precise details of these modifications were not fully detailed in the initial announcement, the changes are central to the agreement’s aim of addressing alleged failures in user protection.
The settlement follows a series of legal challenges for the social-media colossus. In early 2026, Meta lost state trials in California and New Mexico, incurring nearly $1 billion in penalties. These losses preceded the federal proceedings that have now been settled.
The case adds to a growing trend of regulatory scrutiny on major tech firms regarding child privacy. In 2024, TikTok agreed to pay $400 million to settle a US child privacy lawsuit alleging violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
