Meta-owned Threads rolls out messaging functionality to desktop web experience
Connor Hayes confirms the move follows user demand, noting a 30% rise in weekly message volume since the feature's initial introduction in July 2025.

Meta-owned social network Threads has officially launched messaging functionality on its desktop web experience, marking a significant expansion of the platform's core capabilities. The update, announced on Tuesday, introduces one-on-one and group chats to users accessing the service via a browser, bringing the platform in line with competitors such as X and Bluesky.
The new interface includes a dedicated Messages tab that serves as an inbox for direct messages, alongside a specific section for viewing incoming message requests. Users can now search their message history and initiate new conversations directly from the web version. This development addresses a long-standing gap, as Threads launched in 2023 without native direct messaging features, a decision that has since evolved into a central pillar of the network's utility.
Connor Hayes, Meta's head of Threads, stated that the rollout responds to clear user demand identified after direct messages were first introduced in July 2025. Hayes noted that highly engaged users spend considerable time on the web version while at their desks, creating a necessity for a robust web-based conversation app. The feature had been teased earlier in April, but its formal launch today completes the transition to a fully integrated messaging ecosystem.
Since the introduction of native direct messaging earlier this year, the platform has seen a measurable uptick in activity. Data indicates that weekly message volume has increased by 30%, averaging approximately 350 million direct messages per week. This surge underscores the importance of the new web integration for maintaining user engagement across different devices and usage scenarios.
While the web messaging update aligns Threads with market rivals, the platform continues to differentiate itself with unique capabilities. Simultaneously, Threads is launching Live Chat features within the NBA Threads community during the Playoffs. This exclusive tool allows up to 150 active participants to send messages, media, and reactions, while other users can participate in spectator mode.
The consistent addition of new features since its inception demonstrates Threads' ongoing strategy to remain competitive in the crowded social media landscape. By centralising conversations beyond simple posts and replies, the network aims to solidify its position as a primary destination for digital interaction.
