Instagram’s New Instants App Is a Snapchat Clone for Thirst Traps
New Instagram-linked application mirrors Snapchat’s disappearing photo model but strips away filters and retouching tools

Meta has introduced a new standalone application called Instants, designed to facilitate the sharing of unedited, disappearing photographs. The app integrates with existing Instagram accounts and functions as a conceptual clone of Snapchat, though it deliberately excludes filters and retouching capabilities. It is currently available on iOS and Android in select countries and can also be accessed via Instagram’s direct messaging tab.

The application’s interface is minimalist, featuring buttons to flip the camera, activate the flash, and view sent images, with no support for video content. The core design prioritises ephemerality, allowing images to disappear after viewing and enabling users to unsend photos before they are opened by the recipient. Screenshots of shared snaps are blocked by default, although users retain the ability to photograph the screen using an external device.

Recipients are not notified when they view an Instant, and only the sender can see replies and reaction emojis. This level of discretion mirrors features found in Instagram’s Close Friends list, which was introduced in 2018 and has gained a reputation for sharing more selective or intimate content. The platform is governed by the same community guidelines as the main Instagram app, which generally prohibit nudity with specific exceptions for sculptures and breastfeeding.

Meta has previously experimented with standalone social applications, including Edits and Threads. The launch echoes the cultural trajectory of ephemeral messaging platforms, such as Snapchat, which was historically associated with intimate content sharing upon its debut, and Twitter’s now-defunct Fleets feature, which was shut down in the pre-Elon Musk era.

The long-term viability of the standalone Instants app remains uncertain, as it may not persist as a separate application. Meta did not respond to an immediate request for comment regarding the launch.
