Meta acquires Assured Robot Intelligence to advance humanoid AI capabilities
Co-founders Xiaolong Wang and Lerrel Pinto are joining the research division as the tech sector grapples with vastly different market forecasts for the future of robotics.

Meta has acquired humanoid robotics startup Assured Robot Intelligence for an undisclosed sum, a move designed to enhance its artificial intelligence models for robots. The social media giant confirmed the deal in a statement, noting that the acquisition targets a company positioned at the frontier of robotic intelligence. ARI specialises in foundation models that enable robots to understand, predict, and adapt to human behaviour within complex and dynamic environments, with a specific focus on performing physical tasks such as household chores.
The acquired team, led by co-founders Xiaolong Wang and Lerrel Pinto, will integrate into Meta's Superintelligence Labs research division. Wang previously served as a researcher at Nvidia and an associate professor at UC San Diego, while Pinto taught at NYU and co-founded the kid-size humanoid startup Fauna Robotics, which was acquired by Amazon last month. Both founders have received numerous prestigious awards for their work in the field.
This acquisition aligns with Meta's long-standing internal ambitions to develop consumer-facing robots, ambitions that were previously outlined in a leaked memo from approximately one year ago. The deal reflects a broader industry shift where experts believe training AI models through physical interaction is crucial for achieving artificial general intelligence. Consequently, the path to AGI is increasingly viewed as requiring robots to learn through direct interaction in the physical world rather than relying on data alone.
Despite the strategic importance of the hire, the financial terms of the transaction remain undisclosed. Furthermore, there is no confirmed timeline regarding when, or if, Meta will release a consumer humanoid robot product. While internal research has been ongoing for years, the specific technical outcomes of integrating ARI's foundation models with Meta's existing hardware and software stacks have not yet been detailed to the public.
The move occurs against a backdrop of significant uncertainty surrounding the sector's trajectory, with industry forecasts varying wildly. Goldman Sachs has projected a market size of $38 billion by 2035, whereas Morgan Stanley estimates the figure could reach $5 trillion by 2050. This wide spread highlights the enormous potential of the technology while underscoring the challenges it still faces in finding its footing.
Meta's decision to acquire ARI underscores the intense competition and rapid evolution in the robotics space. As the company seeks to deepen its capabilities in robot control and self-learning, the integration of this specialised team marks a significant step in its broader technological strategy.
