Argentina captain Lionel Messi is set to contest his 34th World Cup match in the 2026 final against Spain, a fixture that has reignited debate over whether this will be his final international appearance. While Messi previously hinted that the 2022 final would be his swansong, his continued elite performance suggests otherwise, with speculation now turning toward a potential participation in the 2030 World Cup.
The Argentine side is bidding to become only the third team to win successive World Cups, following Italy in 1934 and 1938, and Brazil in 1958 and 1962. A victory on Sunday would see Messi become the first captain to lift the trophy twice, cementing a legacy that includes 12 World Cup assists, 10 of which have come in knockout rounds. This extends the longest-ever run by a player on record since 1966, surpassing the previous mark of eight assists.
Messi’s current tournament form has been marked by a late-career resurgence. He has scored eight goals in seven games, placing him two goals behind tournament top scorer Kylian Mbappe. Spanish football expert Guillem Balague also doubts this is the end, citing Messi’s passion and ability to perform in 120-minute games, noting that he covered 6.5km in the first 90 minutes against Cape Verde.
The prospect of a seventh World Cup in 2030 adds another layer of intrigue.
