Lionel Messi is poised to become the majority shareholder of Spanish second-division club Eldense after reaching a preliminary agreement to acquire shares held by Grupo TH Soluciones.
Eldense confirmed the agreement to The Associated Press on Wednesday, in a deal reported by Yahoo Sports. The proposed purchase remains subject to the completion of legal and contractual procedures.
The club, based near Alicante in south-east Spain, has not disclosed the financial terms or said when the transaction will be completed. The agreement therefore does not yet amount to a completed change of control.
The move would reportedly mark Messi’s second investment in Spanish football. Earlier this year, he became the owner of fifth-division side UE Cornella, according to the source material.
Eldense dismissed coach Claudio Barragan on Sunday after the club collected two points from its first four league matches this season. The proposed ownership change comes as the club manages both its sporting performance and a pending change in its shareholder structure.
