Inter Miami ended a five-match winless run with a 4-0 victory over D.C. United on Saturday night, in Lionel Messi’s first club match since his farewell appearance for Argentina.

Messi played the full 90 minutes and scored twice, taking his season tally to a league-leading 23. Luis Suárez also claimed a brace, while German Berterame recorded two assists.

Suárez put Miami ahead in the third minute and added a second in the 39th. Messi scored after the break, in the 47th and 60th minutes, to complete the win.

The result was Miami’s first victory since beating CF Montreal 7-1 on 29 August, and the first league win for coach Cristian “Kily” González, who took over on 16 September. D.C. United’s winless run also reached five matches.

Fox Sports, reporting an Associated Press account, said Messi’s Argentina farewell came four days before the match, concluding his 21-year tenure with the national team.
