Mechanism launches Basegrip accessory for Valve Steam Controller
Priced at $9 and available from May 4, the accessory allows users to attach a mobile device to the controller, with a dedicated dock due for release in June.
Mechanism has released the Basegrip for the Steam Controller, a new accessory designed to mount a smartphone to the back of Valve's latest hardware. The product is priced at $9 and will be available for purchase from May 4. While the physical setup theoretically creates a handheld gaming console, current software limitations mean the controller currently functions only with Steam and the Steam Link app on iOS and Android devices.
The Basegrip is contoured to fit snugly over the back of the Steam Controller while accommodating the magnetic charging puck. When combined with Mechanism's existing phone mount, the configuration allows a smartphone to be magnetically attached to the top of the controller. This collaboration between Mechanism and Valve builds on a history of joint development, with Mechanism previously creating mounting solutions for the Steam Deck and providing early access to the new controller's design.
Despite the hardware readiness, the practical utility of the setup is currently constrained by software restrictions on mobile operating systems. Mechanism notes that the controller does not work across all iOS or Android applications yet, meaning users can stream PC games via the Steam Link app but may struggle to play other titles. Future software updates may expand compatibility, but the extent of this support remains uncertain at this stage.
Beyond the Basegrip, Mechanism has also announced a Steam Controller Dock scheduled to ship in June. This accessory is designed to display the controller upright when not in use and incorporates the magnetic charging puck to keep the device powered. A final price for the dock has not yet been confirmed, though Mechanism invites interested buyers to join a waitlist for pre-orders.
The release of these accessories addresses a specific gap in the Steam Controller ecosystem, where the magnetic charging puck previously lacked a dedicated stand, causing the device to lie flat on surfaces. By offering a solution that integrates with the controller's design, Mechanism aims to provide a complete user experience alongside the upcoming launch of the Steam Controller itself.
