Marvel Studios unveils Doomsday trailer, confirming Russo brothers’ Phase Six pivot
Set for release in December 2026, the trailer signals a major shift from the original Kang narrative following Jonathan Majors’ departure.

Marvel Studios has released the first official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday ahead of its presentation at San Diego Comic-Con. Directed by the Russo brothers, the film serves as the penultimate entry in the MCU’s Phase Six and the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. The announcement marks a significant strategic pivot for the studio, which was forced to retool its plans after the conviction and firing of Jonathan Majors, who was originally slated to play Kang the Conqueror in the centrepiece film, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
The narrative is set 14 months after the events of Thunderbolts and brings together heroes from three distinct universes: Earth-616, Earth-828, and the original X-Men universe. The plot involves these disparate groups facing an existential threat, with the trailer depicting initial internal discord and combat between the heroes before they are forced to unite. Robert Downey Jr. returns to the MCU in the role of the villain Doctor Doom, a character drawn from the Secret Wars storyline that the Russo brothers have chosen to prioritise.
The trailer features an ominous voiceover from Thor, played by Chris Hemsworth, who warns of a threat greater than any he has previously encountered. He urges unity among the fractured groups, stating that everything sacrificed will be for nothing if they do not stand together. The narrative suggests that while Thor recognises the necessity of unity against the Latverian threat, he may struggle to rally the troops alone without further intervention.
A key reveal in the footage is the return of Steve Rogers, portrayed by Chris Evans. Rogers is shown wielding Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, suggesting he may be the "miracle" needed to unite the heroes. The film’s extensive cast includes Anthony Mackie, Letitia Wright, Pedro Pascal, and members of the original X-Men film series, alongside numerous cameos from characters such as Peggy Carter and Spider-Man.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for theatrical release on 18 December 2026. This date coincides with the scheduled release of Dune Part 3, which may present competitive challenges at the box office. The film serves as a precursor to Avengers: Secret Wars, which is currently slated for release on 17 December 2027.
