Lisandro Martinez: Man United star impresses for Argentina in World Cup warm-up game
Manchester United defender earns six-out-of-ten rating in friendly victory over Honduras

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez delivered a composed performance for Argentina during a 2-0 friendly victory over Honduras at Kyle Park. The match served as a preparatory fixture for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Martinez starting the game and completing 60 minutes before being substituted for Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero.

The result, secured by goals from Lautaro Martinez and Giuliano Simeone, provides manager Lionel Scaloni with a final opportunity to fine-tune tactics ahead of the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Argentina, seeking back-to-back World Cup titles, utilised the warm-up to acclimatise players to the conditions they will face over the next two months.

Argentine media outlets Clarin and La Nacion rated Martinez six out of ten for his efforts. Clarin described the defender as “solid defensively,” noting that he was not overly troubled by the Honduras attack during his hour on the field. The outlet also highlighted an ambitious bicycle kick attempt from the edge of the box that reportedly “surprised everyone.”

La Nacion echoed the positive assessment, branding Martinez a “dedicated soldier” and citing his “great intensity and desire for never letting up.” The publication noted that despite an injury-ravaged campaign at Old Trafford, Martinez ended the previous season available to manager Michael Carrick, appearing “fit and ready whenever needed.”

Martinez’s availability is seen as crucial for Manchester United, who finished third in the Premier League last term and will compete in the Champions League next season. Carrick will hope Martinez returns to club duty in good health, bringing his defensive rigour to a squad that will require all hands on deck in the new campaign.
