Markets brace for volatility as AI valuations face earnings stress test and Iran tensions rise
Global investors navigate a high-stakes week where technology earnings will determine the sustainability of AI-driven market premiums, while escalating tensions between the United States and Iran threaten to disrupt energy supplies and constrain central bank flexibility.

Global financial markets are bracing for heightened volatility as concerns over an artificial intelligence valuation bubble intensify alongside a critical earnings season for technology giants. The convergence of these pressures coincides with escalating geopolitical tensions following an Iranian attack that killed two U.S. service members, raising fears of renewed conflict and potential disruption to Strait of Hormuz access.
A major earnings wave is underway, with reports from Tesla, Google, Intel, and IBM serving as a stress test for whether current AI infrastructure spending justifies astronomical market valuations. Investors are scrutinising these results to determine if the sector’s fundamental businesses can sustain expectations despite a technology rotation and valuation repricing that has dominated recent weeks.
Geopolitical risks have spiked significantly. Following an Iranian attack that resulted in the death of two U.S. service members and the shooting down of a U.S. helicopter, diplomatic stability has become fragile. U.S. President Donald Trump has implemented a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, causing a significant slump in vessel traffic and raising the spectre of energy price spikes that could destabilise the global economy.
In the private equity space, SpaceX completed an initial public offering at $135 per share, raising approximately $75 billion and achieving a valuation of around $1.77 trillion. Founder Elon Musk stated that if the company achieves its goals, it could be worth more than the rest of Earth, although he also noted that money may eventually become irrelevant.
Financial services earnings from Interactive Brokers and Charles Schwab will reveal how market volatility is impacting trading volumes and wealth management flows. Meanwhile, economic data releases including crude oil inventories on Wednesday, initial jobless claims on Thursday, and preliminary July Manufacturing and Services PMI figures on Friday will provide forward-looking indicators on economic fundamentals amidst these dislocations.
