Manzambi’s rapid rise earns Ballon d’Or young player nomination
The 20-year-old Aston Villa midfielder has moved from Freiburg’s academy to senior international football in two years.
Johan Manzambi has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or’s best young player award, two years after making his senior debut for Freiburg. BBC Sport, in a profile published by Yahoo Sports, charts the 20-year-old’s rapid rise to European prominence.
A breakout season in Germany led Aston Villa to sign him, with the report putting the fee at more than £50 million. Manzambi scored on his full Villa debut, helping secure the club’s first Premier League win of the season.
The nomination places him alongside Lamine Yamal, Yan Diomande and Ayyoub Bouaddi, according to the report. Manzambi made his senior Switzerland debut in June 2025 and is due to face Scotland in the Nations League.
Former coaches cited his mentality, physical development and technical and tactical ability as factors in his progress. The report says he added five kilograms during his first half-season at Freiburg as he worked to become stronger and faster.
