Manchester United in advanced talks for Atalanta midfielder Ederson
Club officials downplay immediacy of £41.6 million deal as financial restructuring continues under new head coach Michael Carrick.

Manchester United are in advanced negotiations to secure Atalanta midfielder Ederson as their first summer signing, with a reported fee of 48 million euros (£41.6 million) likely for the 26-year-old. While multiple sources indicate the deal is close to completion, senior club officials have publicly downplayed the immediacy of a final agreement, noting that Ederson has 12 months remaining on his current contract. The move is viewed as a strategic priority to bolster the central midfield under head coach Michael Carrick, following the departure of Casemiro and ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of Manuel Ugarte.
The potential acquisition coincides with the release of Manchester United’s third-quarter financial results, which reported profits of £37.7 million for the nine months to 31 March. Chief executive Omar Berrada expressed positivity regarding the club’s progress, citing the "continuing positive impact of our business transformation initiatives." However, the accounts also confirmed a £16.7 million cost associated with the dismissal of former manager Ruben Amorim in January, less than 14 months after he was appointed.
Financial transparency remains a critical focus for the club, which confirmed borrowings on a revolving credit facility of £262.5 million as of 31 March. Total debt across three main areas remains just under £1.3 billion, including a £490.1 million legacy debt from the Glazer takeover in 2005 and outstanding transfer fees that constitute the vast majority of the £482 million owed in trade and other payables. Despite these liabilities, United are determined to remain competitive in the transfer market while pledging to avoid the expensive long-term contracts of the past.
Ederson, who has made 180 appearances for Atalanta and scored 16 goals, is seen as a dynamic addition to the squad. He offers more on-the-ball capability than his Uruguayan counterpart and is described as a midfielder in the mould of Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes. Although he was part of Carlo Ancelotti’s long list for the World Cup, he missed out on the final 26-man selection, a decision that may now present a significant opportunity for United to secure a player who has consistently performed at a high level in Serie A.
The search for midfield reinforcements has seen United explore other options, with first-choice target Elliot Anderson reportedly preferring a move to Manchester City. Additionally, Atletico Madrid have opted for Wolves’ Joao Gomes over Ederson, while West Ham are likely to sell Mateus Fernandes due to the financial consequences of relegation. United are also monitoring Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, though they would seek a significantly lower fee than previously offered. Amidst these transfer activities, the club confirmed that work continues behind the scenes on its ambitious new 100,000-seater stadium project.
