Mamdani launches digital town hall on Twitch amid platform tensions
The 'Talk with the People' series debuts May 21, leveraging Amazon-owned Twitch for direct Q&A while simulcasting across major social networks.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is set to launch a new live-streamed series titled 'Talk with the People', marking a distinct shift in how the city’s highest elected official engages with constituents. Debuting on May 21 at 4PM ET, the broadcast will be hosted under the official nyc_mayor account on Twitch, with the format centred on Mamdani answering questions from viewers via chat regarding local issues.
The choice of Twitch as the primary platform is notable given the service’s ownership by Amazon and Mamdani’s history of public criticism towards Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. This tension is underscored by a recent report from The New Republic, which claimed Bezos directed the Washington Post to discredit Mamdani’s leadership. The selection of an Amazon-owned platform for such a direct engagement tool adds a layer of complexity to the political narrative surrounding the mayor.
To mitigate the risks of platform-specific fragmentation, the broadcast will be simulcast across a wide array of social media channels, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X, and Bluesky. This multi-platform strategy reflects a broader trend among officials to reach dispersed demographics that have moved away from traditional media outlets. However, unlike radio or television broadcasts which typically employ editorial filters, the Twitch format offers a more direct and potentially unfiltered interaction model.
The series title references a historical WNYC radio show hosted by former New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia between 1941 and 1945. By adopting this moniker, Mamdani draws a parallel between his digital town halls and the direct radio addresses used by previous leaders to communicate with the public during times of significant civic activity.
Polygon reported on the launch of the series, noting the social media savvy approach of the mayor. While the diffusion of audiences has made traditional public radio less central to civic discourse, the move to Twitch introduces the unpredictability of internet culture into official government communication. The broadcast aims to provide a free-for-all style dialogue, relying on Mamdani’s ability to grapple with the distinct and often volatile nature of online chat communities.
The initiative highlights the evolving landscape of political communication, where direct digital access to constituents is prioritised over mediated reporting. As the internet continues to fragment, officials are increasingly compelled to adopt independent or alternative platforms to maintain direct lines of communication with voters, bypassing traditional gatekeepers.
