Malian army convoy ambushed by rebels north of Gao
Joint claims of responsibility for northern attack underscore deepening instability for ruling military government

The Malian military confirmed on Saturday that an army convoy was ambushed by rebel forces in a remote area of the northern Gao region, marking a significant escalation in the security challenges facing the country’s ruling junta. While the military acknowledged the incident and announced that a counterattack is underway, it provided no specific details regarding the composition of the forces involved or the extent of the damage.

Both the regional al-Qaeda affiliate Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the separatist Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) issued separate statements claiming responsibility for the operation. The groups cited “great human losses” and “serious material damage” inflicted on the Malian army, signalling a coordinated effort that observers say poses substantial risks to the stability of the state.

FLA spokesperson Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane stated that scores of soldiers were killed or captured during the engagement. He further alleged that military vehicles, including armoured cars, were either destroyed or seized in good condition by the militants. The separatist group also released video footage purportedly showing soldiers surrendering while surrounded by armed groups, with one clip appearing to depict rebels firing on soldiers lying on the ground.

The authenticity of the released videos has not been independently verified by external bodies, including the Associated Press. The Malian military’s statement remained brief, confirming only that armed groups ambushed the convoy of soldiers and their partners, without elaborating on the tactical outcome or the specific units involved in the initial strike.

This incident represents the latest in a series of coordinated attacks between JNIM and the FLA, following their increased collaboration in recent months. The two groups merged their operational efforts in 2024, with Tuareg-led separatists fighting for an independent state named Azawad in the north. Their joint campaigns, including a major assault in April, highlight the intensifying competition for influence and territory in the Sahel region, which has become an epicentre of extremist violence.

The ambush in Gao underscores the persistent vulnerability of Malian security forces in the north. As armed groups continue to challenge state authority, the ruling junta faces mounting pressure to secure its territory against a coalition of jihadist and separatist forces that have demonstrated an ability to conduct complex, coordinated operations.
