Tigers face domestic transfer shortage as Will Wade targets international talent for 2026-27 roster

LSU basketball coach Will Wade is reportedly pursuing 25-year-old Israeli guard Yam Madar with an offer estimated at $5 million to bolster the program’s 2026-27 roster. The reported pursuit, first detailed by an Israeli publication, underscores the Tigers’ difficulty in securing domestic transfers, as most top-tier prospects are opting to enter the NBA draft rather than remain in collegiate competition.

Madar, a former second-round draft pick of the Boston Celtics in 2020, currently plays for Hapoel Tel Aviv in the EuroLeague and the Israeli league. In 16 Israeli League games this season, he has averaged 11.1 points and 3.9 assists while shooting 33.9 per cent from three-point range. While these statistics suggest he fits the profile of a solid collegiate role player, the magnitude of the reported financial offer has raised questions regarding whether the investment aligns with his professional production levels.

The move also highlights significant uncertainties surrounding Madar’s collegiate eligibility. He has played professionally at the highest level of Israeli basketball or in top European leagues since the 2018-19 season. Although Madar served in the Israeli military, it remains unclear whether that service would exempt him under potential new NCAA eligibility rules. The NCAA Division 1 Cabinet is expected to discuss a "five for five" proposal later this week, which would allow players five years of eligibility beginning with their high school graduation or their 19th birthday.

Under the proposed framework, eligibility would be determined by age and educational timeline, with military service treated as a rare exception. For context, Tennessee guard Ethan Burg was classified as a 23-year-old sophomore for the 2025-26 season after serving two years in the Israeli military. If similar logic were applied to Madar, who will turn 26 early in the 2026-27 college basketball season, he could potentially be classified as a senior, further complicating his recruitment status.

LSU currently has three transfers committed to the nation’s 40th-ranked transfer class and two international players in the fold for the upcoming season. With only three uncommitted players remaining among the top 85 in the 247Sports rankings, and each exploring the NBA draft, the international market has become Wade’s primary avenue for talent acquisition. The Tigers are also reportedly pursuing 22-year-old Italian League wing Saliou Niang, signalling a broader strategy to secure high-dollar international talent as the program seeks to return to competitiveness in the SEC.
