Louisiana’s Potgieter extends bogey-free streak to 91 holes at NCAA Championship
Malan Potgieter’s 91-hole scoreless streak, believed to be a collegiate record, continues at the 2026 NCAA Men's Golf Championship.

Louisiana senior Malan Potgieter has extended his consecutive bogey-free hole streak to 91, a performance believed to set a new collegiate record during the second round of the 2026 NCAA Men's Golf Championship in Carlsbad, California. The streak, which began at the final hole of the Sun Belt Championship last month, encompasses 54 holes at the NCAA Athens Regional and 36 holes at the national championship. Potgieter carded a 4-under 68 on Saturday, maintaining his precision at Omni La Costa.
The achievement has prompted a humorous response from Louisiana men’s golf coach Theo Sliman, who maintains a standing offer to cook steaks for players who complete a bogey-free round, while the rest of the team receives hot dogs. Sliman noted that he will need to visit a butcher rather than a local grocery store to honour the deal for Potgieter, estimating he owes the senior "half a cow" for his recent form. Potgieter has now recorded five straight bogey-free rounds.
While official record books are not definitive, the 91-hole mark surpasses the previous collegiate benchmark of 76 consecutive holes without a bogey, set by Alabama’s Bobby Wyatt in 2014. The all-time record remains 114 holes, held by LPGA star Jin Young Ko, who broke Tiger Woods’ 2000 season record of 110. Potgieter’s run is particularly notable as it has occurred entirely during postseason play.
Central to Potgieter’s success is his ball striking; since the start of the NCAA Regionals, he has hit 83 of 90 greens. The South African senior, who clarified he has no relation to PGA Tour professional Aldrich Potgieter, credited his improved start-line accuracy and lag putting for the pars. He entered college with a goal to improve his game by half a shot each semester, a mindset that has kept him committed to Louisiana despite interest from other schools.
Heading into the final round, Potgieter sits two shots behind Arizona’s Filip Jakubcik. Ranked 37th in the NCAA golf rankings and nearing the top 25 of the PGA Tour Class of 2026, Potgieter described himself as an underdog who wishes to win a major to establish his own identity. Coach Sliman praised the senior’s high golf IQ, noting that his consistent improvement has put him in contention for the individual national title.
