High school boys soccer: Hat trick hero Patrick Stevenson leads Lone Peak to 6A state championship
Senior striker Patrick Stevenson scores hat-trick to secure first state title since 2005

Lone Peak High School has secured the Utah 6A boys soccer state championship, defeating Farmington 3-1 on Friday afternoon. The victory concludes a 21-year title drought for the Knights, who last claimed the state crown in 2005. Senior striker Patrick Stevenson was instrumental in the win, scoring all three goals, including two within the final six minutes of the match.

The final tested the Knights’ resilience early on. Farmington capitalised on a defensive error in the 10th minute, with Jack Burrup scoring to give the Phoenix an early 1-0 lead. Lone Peak goalkeeper Sam Parker made a critical save immediately after to help stabilise the defence. The Knights responded quickly, with Stevenson scoring an equaliser in the 13th minute following a pass from Kien Cin.

First-year head coach Kyle Hartman emphasised that mental resilience and defensive cohesion were central to the team’s strategy this season. Hartman noted that the squad had been "battle-tested" throughout the year, with most matches decided by narrow margins, often requiring overtime or penalty kicks. This preparation proved vital in managing the pressure of the state final after conceding the opening goal.

Stevenson regained the lead in the 74th minute, scoring the go-ahead goal after receiving a through ball from Jonas Lamont. Stevenson credited a specific training drill with Lamont for the coordinated offside and onside run that created the opportunity. The senior striker described the connection with his teammate as a product of daily practice, noting that he knew Lamont would play the ball at the precise moment of the run.

Lone Peak sealed the victory with Stevenson’s third goal, a long-range shot with 30 seconds remaining in the match. The win ends a period of consecutive state tournament losses for the program. Stevenson, who had been part of the team for four years, suffered a minor injury during the post-match celebrations when the trophy slipped from his grasp, resulting in a gash above his right eye.
