White Plains Hospital-sponsored award highlights Section 1 playoff performances

Voting for the lohud Softball Player of the Week, presented by White Plains Hospital, remains open until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3. The winner will be announced on lohud sports social media later that same day. The selection process recognises standout performances from the week of May 25 to May 31, with a focus on athletes who contributed significantly to their teams during the Section 1 playoff series.

The current shortlist features nominees from prominent local programs, including Tuckahoe, Pearl River, and Kennedy Catholic. Among the candidates is a Tuckahoe junior who pitched a six-inning perfect game in a 12-0 victory over North Salem to secure the Section 1 Class C championship. At the plate, the same player recorded two hits in four at-bats, including a home run, four runs batted in, and two runs scored.

Another nominee, a freshman pitcher, demonstrated significant control during playoff wins against Briarcliff and Putnam Valley. Over those two games, the pitcher registered 19 strikeouts while walking only one batter in each contest. This performance underscores the depth of pitching talent recognised in the current voting cycle.

In the Section 1 Class AA division, a sophomore pitcher for the champions struck out 19 batters in the previous week, including five in the championship game against Yorktown. Meanwhile, in Class A, a junior centre fielder for Pearl River made two crucial catches in the sixth inning that helped clinch the championship win. Another junior from the same division recorded six hits and two RBIs with no fielding errors at first base across three playoff games against Ardsley, Somers, and Pearl River.

A senior nominee also remains in contention after going 6-for-6 with two RBIs in Section 1 playoff games against Blind Brook and Hastings. The award continues a seasonal tradition that has previously recognised athletes such as Shivonne Barry of Mahopac, Sofia Haber of Ardsley, and Peyton Conti of Clarkstown North. Past winners this season also include Emma Smith, Marlena Balic, Cayleigh Handel, Gianna Stracuzzi, and Maddie Collado.

The coverage is produced by Debbie Schechter, who covers softball for The Journal News/lohud, and Phil Strum, the local sports editor. The article originally appeared on the Rockland/Westchester Journal News.
