Liverpool’s transfer strategy under scrutiny as key targets slip away
With Mohamed Salah’s departure leaving a significant void and primary targets Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola unavailable, Liverpool’s summer plans face disruption.
Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes is facing intensified scrutiny over his transfer strategy following a previous summer where the club spent in excess of £450 million on players including Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. Despite the significant investment aimed at retaining the Premier League title and challenging in the Champions League, the squad finished fifth in the domestic league and exited the European competition in the round of 16. The disconnect between financial outlay and on-pitch results has fuelled fan dissatisfaction and prompted some players to consider their futures at the club.
The departure of Mohamed Salah has had a profound impact on the squad’s structure, and attempts to secure a direct replacement have encountered significant obstacles. Yan Diomande was initially positioned as Liverpool’s number one target, with the club briefing media outlets regarding their interest in the Ivorian attacker. However, Diomande ultimately rejected a move to Anfield in favour of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), a decision that has altered the landscape of the current transfer window.
Following the collapse of the Diomande negotiations, Liverpool shifted its focus to PSG’s Bradley Barcola. The strategy was predicated on the expectation that PSG would sell Barcola if they secured Diomande, thereby reducing the Frenchman’s standing within the squad. However, with PSG’s pursuit of Diomande now stalled, the French club has indicated it is unlikely to part with Barcola. PSG are reportedly demanding approximately £128 million for the 23-year-old and have stated he will only be sold if he refuses to agree to a new contract.
The situation has opened opportunities for other European giants, with Real Madrid entering club-to-club talks with RB Leipzig regarding Diomande. According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, Real Madrid agreed personal terms with PSG in June and are now in advanced discussions with Leipzig. Meanwhile, Manchester City and Arsenal have reportedly stepped back from interest in the player, leaving Real Madrid as the primary suitors following Diomande’s preference for a move to Paris.
Hughes’ current approach faces the risk of failing to address the attacking void left by Salah if these deals do not materialise. The sporting director’s previous recruitment drive, while financially substantial, did not yield the expected sporting outcomes, raising concerns that the current strategy may similarly prove unsuccessful. With no immediate resolution to the Barcola situation and Diomande moving closer to a Real Madrid deal, Liverpool’s summer plans remain in a state of flux.
